What do porn, gambling, drugs, sports, Amazon, and social media have in common?
One word... Dopamine!
Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain that creates feelings of pleasure and reward. It’s the reason we feel a sense of satisfaction when we receive a "like" on our latest Instagram post or a new follower on Twitter. This release of dopamine encourages us to repeat the behaviors that led to it, creating a cycle of reward-seeking actions. Our brains also drop big doses of dopamine when we buy something online.
In the last 10 years, we humans have turned into dopamine junkies. We buy on impulse generated by the amount of dopamine flowing through our brains. We crave dopamine. We need it, we have to have it, and we pay for it.
Social media platforms use algorithms to deliver highly targeted ads based on our behavior and preferences. These ads often appear seamlessly within our feeds, making them feel like a natural part of our social media experience. The personalized nature of these ads makes them more appealing and effective, leveraging our dopamine-driven engagement.
No social class is immune. It's a modern society disease created by instant gratification, swiping up/down/left/right, and cheap money! We buy products that explode dopamine in our brains, and the louder the bang, the higher the price.
So next time you're brainstorming a product idea or service... ask yourself this question: how much dopamine will this product generate in my customers' brains? If the answer is "not much," then you're screwed!
